“Beter voorbereid” is a smartphone application designed to assess the risk of complications and aims to optimally support individuals in taking the right measures as they prepare for surgery. The app provides guidance on physical activity, nutrition, alcohol consumption, and smoking cessation in the lead-up to the operation.
Malnutrition and sarcopenia

ProMuscle is a combined lifestyle intervention designed for individuals aged 65 and older, integrating strength training with an increase in daily protein intake.
This projects features a descriptive multicentre study involving 25 centres that investigates the dietary intake of Dutch haemodialysis patients, alongside a systematic review assessing the effectiveness of combined dietary and exercise interventions for kidney patients, as well as the development of a project proposal aimed at enhancing nutritional and physical care for individuals with kidney disease.
Completed projects
EMPOWER-GR aims to enhance understanding of the awareness, feasibility and health effects of a combined nutrition and exercise programme for patients in GRC.
The study examines the effectiveness of the ProMIO intervention on physical functioning, protein intake, exercise behaviour, muscle mass, muscle strength, and cost-effectiveness among migrant seniors from Surinam, Turkey, and Morocco aged 55 and older. It is a powerful lifestyle programme designed specifically for migrant older adults.

Sustainable and healthy food and lifestyle
Ongoing projects
LOFIT integrates a lifestyle portal into patient care, focusing not only on physical activity but also on other health-related behaviours such as nutrition and smoking.
In the PEARLS-project, we explore whether plant-based nutrition is the optimal choice for patients in hospital settings.
Completed projects
Many vulnerable patients undergoing a TAVI procedure for a new aortic valve tend to have poor dietary habits and insufficient physical activity. This adversely affects their physical recovery post-surgery. The RITME-project aims to better identify the risk factors related to nutrition and exercise. Additionally, the project team is exploring how healthcare professionals can enhance nutritional and physical care in both preoperative and postoperative stages, ensuring that patients have a smoother recovery.
